Tonight, a woman is fighting for her life after her mother was killed in the Sandy Hook Massacre 11 years ago. Since then, Erica Laherty has been fighting gun violence, and now she's battling a rare form of cancer. To make matters worse, she says her insurance doesn't cover her treatment, and as of today, she doesn't have enough money to pay for next month. Lindsay Davis with her story.

[00:00:22]

I think about how much was stolen when she was taken from us.

[00:00:26]

In the 2012 Sandy Hook Massacre, Principal Dawn Hawksbrong is credited with sacrificing her life for her children.

[00:00:34]

The principal of the school was running toward the shooter in order to protect her students.

[00:00:41]

And today, her own child, Erica Lafferty, says she's now fighting to save her own life.

[00:00:47]

Diagnosed with a cancer in the brain that spread to her GI tract, the 38-year-old says she could no longer afford her potentially life-saving treatment.

[00:00:56]

That medication is considered experimental by my insurance company. I have fought to the highest extent that I am able to try to have it covered and have been largely unsuccessful. I am purchasing two bottles out of pocket monthly, and it's between $40,000 and $45,000 a month.

[00:01:24]

Have the doctor said what would happen if you aren't able to continue affording this medication?

[00:01:30]

They asked me if I wanted to have that conversation, and I told them no.

[00:01:35]

You don't want to know? No.

[00:01:38]

The reality of her situation is a far cry from the $111.4 million she won last year in judgments against Alex Jones, part of a $1.4 billion payout to Sandy Hook families for promoting lies about the massacre. I've already said I'm sorry.

[00:01:55]

Hundreds of times, and I'm done saying I'm sorry. The conspiracy world took over, and I had no control over my name, my reputation, what people said about me, what people did to me.

[00:02:08]

Jones has since filed for bankruptcy and hasn't paid Laforty or any of the Sandy Hook families a single penny.

[00:02:16]

In a statement to ABC News, Alex Jones's attorney said the bankruptcy case remains active. There is no ability to pick and choose among the creditors. The plaintiffs should press their claims through counsel and not the press.

[00:02:29]

The legal process takes time, and that's time that Erica, unfortunately, doesn't have right now.

[00:02:33]

Erica's attorney is now asking permission in court to seek a loan against the Alex.

[00:02:38]

Jones judgment. There are companies that make loans to people who have not yet been able to recover their verdicts. So it's not an ideal scenario, but it's one that she's exploring.

[00:02:48]

What would you like to say to Alex Jones?

[00:02:51]

How dare you torture me for a decade plus? I have no issue with the way you wastefully spend money when you owe so much to so many, and I am fighting for my life. I just want to be able to buy my chemo next month.

[00:03:12]

You've also talked about how important it is for you to live to see your 48th birthday. Why 48?

[00:03:17]

My mom was killed at 47, and she was young and fierce and funny and determined. I don't think that there should be two lives cut so short. I'm not done yet.
