For Only Murders in the Building. I'm Charles Hay.

[00:00:05]

What the hell? It's the Who Done It sensation, Only Murders in the Building.

[00:00:11]

Can we just take a beat to appreciate how magical this is? The Three of Us.

[00:00:15]

Starring Martin Short, Selena Gomez, and Steve Martin.

[00:00:19]

You're a trio that just seems to be a well-oiled machine. The chemistry is something that's magical.

[00:00:24]

Well, with Marty, that's actually chemicals.

[00:00:26]

The Three of Us do share an approach in general to show business, which is you show up on time, you learn your lines, and you are kind to everyone.

[00:00:39]

Can you break this? I'll give you the 20, you give me back 15.

[00:00:43]

The Hulu hit featuring three neighbors in a New York City apartment building who become unlikely slews in murder mysteries. The new season starts August 27th. The trio taking their podcast to the West Coast.

[00:00:58]

Guys, we're going to Hollywood.

[00:01:00]

Or it's being made into a Hollywood movie.

[00:01:03]

And Mabel, with your traumatized, homeless, jobless, mumbling millennial charm stuck between these two old dudes. So That's so funny.

[00:01:15]

A-listers playing themselves inspired by the podcasters. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel.

[00:01:22]

This is, well, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel.

[00:01:26]

I'm Eugene Levy.

[00:01:28]

I'm Eva Lungoria.

[00:01:30]

Oliver, this is Zack Galefin.

[00:01:32]

Yes, Zack Galefragilistic, of course.

[00:01:35]

The trailer, first of all, everybody just goes with the level of stars that you have, the roster, right? Eva Lungoria, Molly Shannon, Zack Galef and I. It goes on and on.

[00:01:47]

It does go on and on. I'm continually amazed because Season 3 is so strong, and so is Season 2 and Season 1, and I think Season 4 notches it up again.

[00:01:59]

Even Lungoria is playing you. Yeah. What do you think of that? Did you work with her before?

[00:02:03]

Well, I thought it was funny because we reference our age difference, and it's very cute. And of course, it's a compliment. She's gorgeous and she's hilarious.

[00:02:13]

She's a funny line where she says to you in the first episode, she says something to the effect of, you're probably wondering why they cast a little older. The studio felt it was too creepy that you at your age would hang around with those old guys.

[00:02:27]

The cast promising another thrilling season. We've seen the trailer. What do you think? I mean, folks feel like they know what they're getting?

[00:02:36]

I think Season 4 has a spectacular mystery to it.

[00:02:40]

I also feel like it doesn't matter how much talent we have. It is so seamless, and everybody will be surprised, hopefully, and enjoy it, because I most certainly feel like this is our best one.

[00:02:54]

And of course, there's a new murder to investigate.

[00:02:57]

What we need is a hot, fresh dead body, preferably right here.

[00:03:01]

After Season 3 ended with a bang. When Saz, Charles's longtime stunt double played by Jane Lynch, is gunned down. Who would kill Saz? Back for Season 4, Oscar winner Meryl Streep as Loretta Derken, the long, struggling actress who's finally caught her big break.

[00:03:22]

You're a vision.

[00:03:23]

Oh, my God. I missed you. Look at you.

[00:03:26]

Hi, hi, hi.

[00:03:27]

What a long, cold winter it's been without you.

[00:03:30]

Oliver, it's been like five days. Well, Loretta, she is who probably I would be if I hadn't had a series of incredible breaks.

[00:03:41]

There's so, so, so many unbelievably wonderful, talented actors that never get that series of breaks. And so Loretta is a character who comes in through the theater, as I did, but just never caught the wave. Know.

[00:04:00]

Her character delivering a moving performance in Season 3.

[00:04:05]

So, darling, my darling, look for the light. The song that they gave me to sing was like a gift. I mean, it was one of the most beautiful things, and I still sing it to my grandchildren all know it, and they love it.

[00:04:26]

We sat in this room, and Meryl was up there rehearsing a number. I felt like I was watching Meryl Streep sing a song to me. It was just magic.

[00:04:37]

I just started crying. I wasn't even on screen. It was just really beautiful and memorable.

[00:04:42]

It was really beautiful.

[00:04:43]

Come on, Meryl, The legendary actress admitting even she was nervous about finding her way into the tight trio.

[00:04:50]

That's a Selena sandwich. I didn't know how I would fit in the two. Fairly well-toasted white pieces and Selena's like the meat of the matter.

[00:05:03]

But says she ultimately just played a version of herself.

[00:05:07]

I thought, I think maybe I'll just do this one as me. And so it was special in that way. I just came in stripped down or stripped down. I just wanted joy, and I got it. I got it every day.

[00:05:30]

That's a wrap.

[00:05:31]

Season 4.

[00:05:35]

What makes this so special to you? Because it's so interesting having watched the evolution of this show. There is this core trio, and you just rift off of each other, and one would think you're just laughing a mile a minute while you're doing it. What is it?

[00:05:51]

Well, a lot of it is the writing. Is that what you've got good things to say to each other and good things to respond to?

[00:05:57]

I genuinely feel like our show is we are together. I just feel like that is the essence and will always be the center of our show is our friendship.

[00:06:10]

Our thanks to Deborah. The new season of Only Murders in the Building drops Tuesday on Hulu.
