This story is about thousands of treasures the British Museum says were stolen and damaged by an insider thief, and a man who warned the museum it was happening and was ignored for two years. The theft scandal made headlines around the world last summer. A world famous museum admitting its artifacts had been stolen, perhaps over decades. Many of those treasures were sold off very cheaply over eBay. Gem dealer Itai Gradel bought hundreds without realizing they may have come from the British Museum. But Itai became suspicious of the eBay seller and believed he'd found their real name through PayPal. The name he'd found was Peter Higgs, a British Museum curator. Itai went to the museum in 2021 to warn them, but he was ignored. But why did it take the museum so long to believe him? It says it made mistakes and that the thief was covering his tracks. Peter Higgs, a senior curator, was sacked in 2023. He denies doing anything wrong. The police investigation is still ongoing and nobody has been arrested or charged with any offense.
