I'm Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley. It's Tuesday, June 18th, and this is your Morning Wire Afternoon Update. A New York Court of Appeals has rejected former President Trump's bid to lift the gag order against him. Daily Wire Senior Editor, Joel Niedler has more.

[00:00:32]

The court says that, No substantial constitutional question is directly involved. Lawyers for the former President have argued that the order is an infringement on Trump's First Amendment rights, especially with the November election right around the corner. Trump's campaign has echoed those calls, saying the order is unconstitutional and that it's an effort to silence the leading presidential candidate. Judge Juan Mershon imposed the gag order ahead of Trump's New York City Hush Money trial, restricting him from speaking about the witnesses as well as the case through the end and even after the trial. Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records nearly three weeks ago and faces sentencing on July 11th.

[00:01:09]

More evidence has come to light suggesting strong political bias against Trump from the district attorney behind that hush money case, Alvin Bragg. A new report from Daily Wire shows that a year before Trump's historic conviction in Manhattan, Bragg attended a fundraiser for a group trying to get Trump's name off the ballot. Daily The Wire investigative reporter, Luke Rosiak, has more.

[00:01:33]

In May 2023, Bragg attended the main fundraiser for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which has been on the front lines of legal efforts to keep Americans from being able to hear from and vote for Trump. He was pictured alongside film director Spike Lee, who has said Trump will go down in history with the likes of Hitler. The wife of Matthew Calangelo, who left a top role in Joe Biden's Department of Justice to work for Bragg on the Trump case, is on the group's board. The revelation comes as Bragg finds himself under fire by Trump supporters for what they characterize as a political prosecution of the former President. The aggressive prosecution of Trump for 34 felonies comes despite the NAACP fund advocating for a more lenient criminal justice system and alternatives such as restorative justice.

A federal judge in Iowa has temporarily blocked the state from enforcing its new immigration law. Daily Wire reporter Tim pierce has the latest.

[00:02:26]

The legislation would have allowed for the filing of criminal charges against illegal immigrants with outstanding deportation orders or previous denials of entry into the US. The judge said the law conflicts with constitutional law and that federal immigration law superseded any state laws. Governor Kim Reynolds and Iowa's attorney general, Brenna Bird, who planned to appeal the ruling, criticized the Biden administration's border policies. Both said the Biden administration has left states defenseless amid the ongoing crisis at the Southern border. The Iowa law was set to take effect on July first.

A Boeing whistleblower's explosive allegations are shaking things up on Capitol Hill. The accusations came just hours before Boeing CEO was grilled during a Senate hearing. Daily Wire investigative reporter, Mareida Lourdi, reports.

[00:03:14]

Senator Richard Blumenthal's office revealed yesterday that Boeing employee Sam Mohawk has accused the company of mishandling nonconforming parts. Mohawk, who's a quality assurance inspector, claims Boeing sometimes repurposes flawed parts into new airplanes and was concealing that fact from the FAA. Blumenthal asserts that Mohawk may face retaliation for speaking out. Meanwhile, Boeing is promising a thorough review while company officials continue to reaffirm the company's commitment to safety. Ceo David Calhoun faced some tough questioning before the Senate permanent Committee on Investigations today. Here's Calhoun answering New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan.

[00:03:50]

We do have a process. If I get a retaliation claim, I have a team. Again, they're independent. They are meant to investigate They're meant to assume that that allegation is correct. They are not always determined to be correct.

[00:04:08]

I would suggest, because you couldn't answer how many folks have been disciplined or fired for retaliation, I would suggest that a personally involved CEO might be able to get us that information, and that if you talked about the discipline that you took towards people who retaliated against whistleblowers, there might be less retaliation.

A Los Angeles Unified School district vote could ban cell phones and social media for its over 429,000 K-12 students. The district's proposal aims to minimize distractions and keep kids focused in class. If approved, new policies could roll out by fall, enforcing restrictions by the spring of 2025. The vote on the initiative comes days after US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called for social media warning labels amid rising concerns over children's mental health. Police say Justin Timberlake has been charged for driving while intoxicated in the Hamptons. Timberlake allegedly ran a stop sign and swerved into oncoming traffic early this morning.
