The results are expected to be announced on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to win. But critics say it comes at a cost to democracy. They accuse Modi of cracking down on opposition candidates and ramping up rhetoric against Muslims to rally the Hindu majority. Where India heads in the future is a crucial concern for the United States.
