Did you get to spend any time with friends this past weekend? Sunday was National Friendship Day, so we're taking a moment to celebrate the chosen family in our lives. Zinkley and I each sat down with a longtime friend to reflect on our relationships.

[00:00:15]

We met in junior high.

[00:00:18]

I remember my first big one-on-one was asking you to go to the US Open with me. I was like, Well, this is perfect because Kate and I play tennis together, and it'll be a fun experience.

[00:00:27]

I don't think you know how much that meant me. It was like a life moment for me. I think that's one of the first times that you and I got closer because we spent all that time together.

[00:00:37]

You and I have known each other since we were 12? Yeah. Yeah. Middle school. That's a long time. What were we like back then?

[00:00:48]

I remember meeting you, and you were very quiet and reserved, and I was very outgoing, and now we are with the reverse of that. I think once you got to high school, you started gossiping. And so you were the one who texted me, I want to go see a movie. And that was the start of a beautiful friendship based on twilight.

[00:01:10]

I really appreciate how much effort you put in to staying in touch. You've really gone to lengths to make sure because you moved away in high school. That could have been the end.

[00:01:22]

We've made some fun times. We all turned 50 the same year, and you guys all came to Florida. I thought that was one of our really special, most recent ones. Whenever you have a story anywhere near any of us, you'll try to go a few hours early, or a day early, or say a day late to connect with us.

[00:01:38]

We became friends in middle school, but we actually never went to the same school. And in many ways, our friendship has continually had to learn how to communicate and maintain a relationship despite not seeing each other, right?

[00:01:52]

I think you were really great at making a point to Paul me. You really taught me how to maintain that connection.

[00:02:01]

What do you think it is about long term friendships, Sarah? Because you and I have known each other so long.

[00:02:06]

I think we're all very real people. I think that you've always been a real person. You haven't changed since going into this industry. I think you've always stayed so humble and gracious.

[00:02:17]

I would say the same about you, though, Sarah. You are one of the most down to earth people I know, and you're so kind, and your family is so important to you. Your friends are so important to you.

[00:02:27]

I think we've had such longevity in our because we've both come to each other with grace and wanting to understand each other. We're all human. Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has those days.

[00:02:45]

Everybody knows what I'm talking about.

[00:02:49]

Everybody has those days.

[00:02:51]

Yeah. But for us, there's been this really important intention about chosen not just friendship, but family. Family. I don't have any sisters, but I consider you... You are an emergency contact for me.

[00:03:06]

In a true friendship, you're there for the good times, the great times, the weddings, all of it, the children being born. But you're also there for all the hard times, too. I feel the exact same way. I think I've learned from you. You stuck through some hard, hard times. I think back to your parents' passing, and I've learned grace from you and how to, I don't know, just keep going in the face of hardship.

[00:03:32]

It's been beautiful to commit to loving someone as a friend through all of those changes. And I think that has taught me so much. I've also learned about discipline and organization.

[00:03:44]

I think I've learned to be more free flowing. We can have a plan, and the craziest things can happen, and you're just like, I'm going around the obstacles.

[00:03:54]

We will continue to be friends well into our old age, and we We get to keep learning about life with each other.

[00:04:03]

You know me inside out, and it's just, I don't know, there's a level of comfort there.

[00:04:09]

It's an honor to have a friendship with you.

[00:04:12]

Oh, that was special. And Special. These photos are special. These are pictures of our team at NBC News Daily, the people who work on this show, and these are the friends in their lives. And we are wishing all of you out there a happy National Friendship Day, and just maybe celebrate today, a day late. Go find your best friend and say hi.
