In the Connecticut countryside, there's holiday spirit by the acre. Families come from all over to maple Row Christmas tree farm in search of the perfect pine.

[00:00:10]

But in addition to the farms, fun sights and sounds, there's another holiday tradition that makes maple Row a little more memorable. A Christmas tree farm, Tailgate, right in the parking lot. Hey, it's tailgate time.

[00:00:28]

-it's a Tailgate time. -zinclay. Zinclay and I had to try it out, of course. Oh, it smells good. We brought cocoa, cookies, cheese, and company. Cheers, cheese. My husband, Chris, and our dog, Bowie, joined us along with Zinkley's friends, Cailin and James. Our best efforts, no match for families like this one. Wow, thank you. Who've been carrying on the tailgating tradition for seven years. What are you making?

[00:00:52]

A meatball, palm. A meatball? What? And we thought our cookies were fagg. Oh, my gosh. Meatball, palm, barbecue, and even elaborate cocktails. Cheers. Some families staying out here all day long to celebrate tradition.

[00:01:07]

You don't have to come and stay all day, but you do for some reason. Why is that? What's special.

[00:01:11]

About it? Well, because it's important to make time together with your family, especially around the holidays. We've done it since we were little, so now we're starting hopefully to pass it on to our kids. Okay. All right, you ready?

[00:01:22]

Yeah. Let's go for.

[00:01:23]

Our hay ride. Once our belly were full, a ticket to ride. The task at hand, find a tree. Oh, they're so pretty.

[00:01:30]

You're getting a little tree.

[00:01:32]

A New York-sized tree.

[00:01:33]

And I'm getting the big, suburban-sized tree. I love it. They've been growing trees here at Maple Row Farm since the 1920s. On a good day, they'll sell several thousand trees.

[00:01:44]

And if all the people who buy Christmas trees around 30 % do it this way, chopping it down themselves. This is the part where we grab the saw.

[00:01:53]

Yes, the saw. Oh, fine. All right. Oh, I.

[00:01:56]

Think I saw one.

[00:01:57]

Over there. Oh, that one's really nut. That one's really nice.

[00:02:01]

I like it. Once we found a tree for Kate, it was my turn to cut down my first real Christmas tree. I got to go to the gym. You did it. You did it. Yay. So cool. I will do that again.

[00:02:19]

Maple Row, a family business spanning eight generations, often balancing an uncertain economy with the fact that these trees take almost 10 years to grow.

[00:02:28]

We've raised our prices a little bit each year. These past couple of years have been more than normal. I hope we can keep it going. There aren't a lot of other farms like us around, so hopefully we'll have enough uniqueness and it'll work.

[00:02:40]

People are tailgating now at the Christmas tree farm.

[00:02:44]

You know what? It's cool. It's a fun holiday. It's just an addition to the tradition.

[00:02:51]

An addition to the tradition, we can certainly get behind. This was.

[00:02:56]

So fun. Yes, a Christmas memory made. Cheers. Cheers.

[00:02:59]

Best shoot ever.

[00:03:03]

It was so fun. And shout out to Kate because her family's been going.

[00:03:06]

There for years. Years and years. My kids and my husband and I and the dog have been doing that. But I want to see you put your tree up, right?

[00:03:13]

I did, folks. Okay, it made it into my small New York apartment. No judgment, though, because I haven't put up decorations yet. But there she is in all her little glory.

[00:03:21]

We're going to do a little.

[00:03:22]

Decorating this week.

[00:03:23]

What about yours? We haven't decorated it yet either. We have lights on the tree, but I'm waiting for my son to get home so we can put actual ornament.

[00:03:31]

I love it. My claim to fame. And look.

[00:03:32]

It's right up to the... We've got the size right. It goes right to.

[00:03:35]

The ceiling. Yes. Kate Snow is a masterful tree finder, but I was proud to say- You picked it. I picked the tree.

[00:03:41]

The Snow tree. For real, she found it. Anyway, try out the tailgating. It's a lot of fun. I didn't expect that.

[00:03:47]

No, it really was. It made the experience joyful. And it was so incredible to see the families who showed up to you.
